Habitat for Humanity of Marion County Achieves Community Land Trust Certification in Pioneering Statewide Program


Habitat for Humanity of Marion County received its Community Land Trust Certification – the first such non-profit in the state to be awarded the distinction. “For so many communities in our state, CLT’s are an essential solution for ensuring permanent affordability,” stated Florida Housing Coalition President and CEO Jaimie Ross. “We are thrilled that our state is leading the nation in standardizing CLT best practices. Two Reports Detail Pandemic’s Effect on Housing Needs in Florida

Today, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) and the Florida Housing Coalition released independent reports that tell a consistent story—the national housing crisis and Florida’s housing crisis have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic — induced by a loss of employment and an unusually high priced housing market for both homeownership and rentals. According to both The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes and the Florida Housing Coalition’s 2021 Home Matters Report, many low-income households were already struggling to afford their rent even before COVID-19 devastated so many throughout the state. Member Advisory: State Eviction Protections Now Fall Under CDC Order

On September 30, Governor Ron DeSantis allowed the state’s eviction and foreclosure moratorium to expire.  According to a press release, the Governor allowed the state moratorium to expireto avoid any confusion over whether the CDC’s [Order] should apply in a particular circumstance.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Order the Governor refers to was issued in early September. The Order, which protects eligible tenants from eviction for non-payment of rent through the end of 2020, is clear to apply only to states that do not have a moratorium on residential evictions with the same level of protection that the Order provides. Now, since the Florida moratorium is no longer in effect, it is clear that the CDC order will control Florida eviction protections through the end of 2020. READ MORE…

Pensacola City Council Receives Recommendations from Affordable Housing Task Force

In order to successfully fulfill their goal of “Creating 500 Homes in 5 Years”, the city of Pensacola will need to lead a cohesive land use, financing, and strategic partnership framework to carry out its vision, details the Final Report of the Pensacola Affordable Housing Task Force. Truist Supports Affordable Housing with Impactful Grant to the Florida Housing Coalition

The  Florida  Housing  Coalition, the state’s nonprofit provider of training and technical assistance dedicated to affordable housing from ending homelessness to first-time homeownership,  announced the receipt of a $50,000 grant from Truist Financial Corporation  to further the Coalition’s most critical work. Jaimie Ross: SHIP Reprogramming to Respond to COVID-19

The amount of rental assistance needed everywhere in the nation is staggering. As soon as the declaration of disaster was declared for COVID-19, Florida’s State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) programs began reprogramming local housing trust fund dollars to provide emergency rental assistance and mortgage foreclosure prevention funding due to job loss from the pandemic.
